About
the SUB BMC
The Internal Medicine and
Therapeutic Department as a SUB- BMC is tasked with the responsibility of
managing and running the internal affairs of the Internal Medicine Department.
The department provides healthcare services for adult patients with medical
conditions. The core functions of the department is/are:
The main building of the department of Internal Medical (Building AA) is
located on East of the central Administration of the hospital with GPS address
NT-0101-5331.
The department has recently instituted a team-based care system based on
sub-specialty designations:
Medical 1: Cardiology/Nephrology
Medical 2: Neurology/Respiratory
Medical 3: Gastroenterology/Endocrinology & Diabetes
Each medical floor has a bed capacity of sixty (60) beds and four (4)
VIP rooms.

The vision of the department is to become the center
for excellent and quality medical care services within the Northern part of
Ghana.
The mission of the department is to provide affordable and quality medical
care and services delivered by well trained, professional and highly motivated
skilled staff.
Services
Provided
The Internal Medicine Department provides a variety of healthcare
services to adults with medical conditions in Northern Ghana and beyond.
These services include outpatient care in General Physician,
Sub-specialty and Specialized Clinics. In-patient services are offered for
patients with medical emergencies and patients who require admission on our
wards. Clinicians in the department also support the care of adult patients in
other care disciplines by providing medical consultation services as needed.
The Renal dialysis unit provides hemodialysis and other healthcare
services to patients with kidney diseases.
The Chest Clinic/Unit is responsible for the care of patients with
Tuberculosis.
The STI Unit provides services relating to all sexually transmitted infections.
They also support the care of people living with HIV.
The
Endoscopy Unit provides a broad range of endoscopy services including lower and
upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, CLO testing for Helicobacter pylori, band
ligation for oesophageal varices, amongst others.
The Diet Therapy Unit
attends to the dietary and nutritional needs of patients whose medical
conditions require a modification of their diet.
The Psychiatry Unit is
staffed with Psychiatrists and Clinical Psychologists to provide holistic
mental health care in a therapeutic environment.
Management Structure
The Internal Medicine and Therapeutics department has the Head of Department
as the top management member of the management structure.

The various Unit heads are part of the management structure and play a
major role in the efficient running of the Sub-BMC.

The Internal Medicine and Therapeutics Department is currently headed by
Dr. Prosper Akanbong a Consultant in
General Internal Medicine, MWACP, MGCP.
He has been a Medical Director and a Chief Executive Officer of the
Tamale Teaching Hospital.
He has a vast experience in the field and has contributed a lot in the
set-up of the department and its operationalization.
Additional consultants and specialists in the department are involved in
teaching and training of medical students and other cadres of trainee health
workers like physician assistants, pharmacy students, residents and exchange
students. They also train clinical staff in the department and beyond in
clinical algorithms developed to suit the local context in collaboration with
AMPATH Ghana. Additional training in ACLS, for departmental clinical staff.
