SKIP THE BIRTHDAY PARTY, PRIORITIZE CERVICAL CANCER VACCINATION – GYNAECOLOGIST ADVISES PARENTS

Parents should consider investing in their children's health by prioritizing the cervical cancer vaccine over extravagant birthday celebrations, a leading gynaecologist has advised.

Dr. Hawa Malechi, a consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist, made this appeal during a sensitization programme aimed at raising awareness about cervical cancer. She expressed concern over the high number of cervical cancer-related deaths, despite the disease being preventable.

"As a preventive measure, vaccines are available for girls between the ages of nine and fourteen," Dr. Hawa stated. "The aim is to protect the child before their first sexual debut."

She further emphasized that Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH), in collaboration with the University for Development Studies (UDS) and the Academic Model Providing Access to Healthcare (AMPATH), is well-equipped to provide treatment for cervical cancer.

Dr. Hawa urged women to take advantage of regular screenings, stressing that early detection can save lives.
