Tamale Teaching Hospital Performs First Total Knee Replacement Surgery

Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) successfully conducted its first total knee replacement surgery on September 13, 2024. The procedure, performed by the Orthopaedic Sub-BMC team, was carried out on a 58-year-old woman who had been experiencing severe knee pain at night for the past three years.

This achievement follows the team's previous successes with total hip replacement surgeries, demonstrating TTH's growing expertise in complex orthopaedic procedures.

In an interview, Dr. (Med) Alatiga John Abanga, a leading orthopaedic surgeon at TTH, urged the public, especially those suffering from hip and knee pain, to seek medical assistance at the hospital. "TTH has the expertise to conduct total knee and hip replacement surgeries, and I want to encourage the public with these conditions to come to TTH for treatment," he said.

Dr. Abanga also specifically called on the Muslim community in Northern Ghana to take advantage of these services, noting that untreated knee or hip pain could significantly impact their ability to observe prayers.

TTH continues to enhance its medical capabilities, providing essential surgical interventions that improve the quality of life for patients in the region.
