W.H.O. TRAINS TTH STAFF ON ANTIMICROBIAL STEWARDSHIP

The World Health Organization (WHO) has concluded a two-day training session for the staff of the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH), aimed at strengthening the hospital’s capacity to combat antimicrobial resistance (AMR). The training, which covered six modules, forms part of WHO’s ongoing efforts to equip healthcare workers with the necessary tools and knowledge to curb the spread of antimicrobial resistance, a growing global concern.

Dr. Dominic Otchere, the Director of Pharmaceutical Services at the Ghana Health Service, recognized TTH's crucial role in the Antimicrobial Stewardship campaign. In his address, he expressed concern over the rising consumption of antimicrobials and the corresponding surge in antimicrobial resistance. He emphasized that AMR poses not only a healthcare crisis but also a serious global security threat with far-reaching economic consequences. He attributed the inappropriate use of antimicrobials in both humans and animals as a primary cause of resistance.

Dr. Salifu Alhassan Tia, the Director of Pharmacy at TTH, encouraged participants to fully engage in the training, noting that the knowledge gained would be instrumental in their fight against AMR. He urged the staff to utilize the training to improve their practices and strategies, as the battle against microbial invasion continues to intensify globally.

This workshop is part of a larger strategy by WHO and local healthcare authorities to strengthen antimicrobial stewardship and enhance the capacities of medical institutions in Ghana and beyond.
