PATIENTS WITH HEART CONDITIONS BREATHE SIGH OF RELIEF AS TAMALE TEACHING HOSPITAL PERFORMS SECOND PACEMAKER IMPLANTATION

Patients with heart conditions are breathing a sigh of relief as the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) successfully performs its second pacemaker implantation. This medical milestone was achieved through a collaborative effort between TTH and a team from Mount Carmel Foundation, marking a significant improvement in cardiac care services in the region.

This year, nine patients received pacemaker implantations at TTH with support from Mount Carmel Foundation, a remarkable increase from the three patients who underwent the procedure in 2023 when the hospital first introduced the service. According to Dr. Abdul-Subulr Yakubu, a cardiologist at TTH, the procedure is performed on patients diagnosed with heart block-a condition that prevents the heart from beating fast enough to sustain normal body function.

Dr. Yakubu explained that patients with heart block typically present with symptoms such as fatigue, uneasiness, loss of consciousness, and, in severe cases, sudden death. The pacemaker implantation procedure involves placing a small device inside the chest to regulate the heart’s rhythm, ensuring it beats at an appropriate rate.

Dr. Yakubu emphasized the critical role played by Dr. Kamel Addo and his team from Mount Carmel Foundation in making the procedure accessible to patients. “Without the intervention of Dr. Addo and his team, these patients would not have been able to afford the pacemaker,” he stated. Through this collaboration, the pacemakers were provided to the patients free of charge, easing the financial burden on them and their families.

The impact of this initiative has extended beyond the Northern Region, with patients traveling from Accra and other parts of the country to access the life-saving intervention at TTH.

At an exit conference, Dr. Yakubu expressed profound gratitude to the hospital’s management for their unwavering support in making the mission a success

He further assured the public that plans are underway to build the capacity of the local team at TTH, ensuring that such critical cardiac interventions become a regular feature of healthcare delivery in the region. “We are committed to strengthening our expertise so that this essential service remains accessible to our people,” Dr. Yakubu affirmed.

The success of the second pacemaker implantation at TTH represents a major step in advancing specialized medical care in Ghana, offering hope to countless individuals suffering from heart-related conditions.
