The Ghana Medical Trust Fund, under the MahamaCare Initiative, is set to deliver a state-of-the-art catheterisation laboratory (Cath Lab) to the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH). This move is expected to significantly improve cardiac care delivery in northern Ghana.
The announcement was made by Obuobia Darko-Opoku, Administrator of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, during a meeting with Management of TTH in Tamale, where the proposed site for the project was inspected.
According to Madam Darko-Opoku, the project is being championed by President John Dramani Mahama, who expressed concern over the long distances patients from northern Ghana are to travel to cities such as Kumasi and Accra to access cardiac-related services. She quoted the President as saying that “the drama is over,” signaling a decisive move to decentralize specialized healthcare services.
She further assured Management that healthcare professionals who will work in the new facility will undergo specialized training well ahead of the project’s completion to ensure smooth and effective service delivery.
The Board Chair of TTH, Dr. Simon Naporoo, described the project as unprecedented and historic. He noted that President Mahama has been closely associated with Phases I and II of the hospital’s expansion. He expressed confidence that the same leadership will successfully deliver Phase III.
“It is President Mahama who could have done it, and he is doing it,” Dr. Naporoo stated, adding that several past presidents had come and gone without achieving this milestone.
The Chief Executive Officer of TTH, Dr. (Med.) Abubakari Bawah Abdulai, also commended the Ghana Medical Trust Fund and President Mahama for the swift delivery of the project. He emphasized that the Cath Lab will bring critical healthcare services closer to the people of northern Ghana and greatly reduce the burden on patients and their families.
The Cath Lab project is expected to enhance emergency cardiac care, reduce referral times, and mark a major step forward in equitable healthcare delivery across the country.
