TAMALE TEACHING HOSPITAL, GHANAIAN SOCIETY OF CARDIOLOGY LAUNCH HYPERTENSION AWARENESS CAMPAIGN

Tamale Teaching Hospital, in collaboration with the Ghanaian Society of Cardiology, has launched the 2026 World Hypertension Day celebration under the theme: “Controlling Hypertension Together: Check Your Blood Pressure Regularly, Defeat the Silent Killer.”

The initiative aims to spread awareness about hypertension across all regions of Ghana and encourage regular blood pressure checks among the population.

Speaking at the launch, Dr. Dzifa Ahadze, a cardiologist, outlined a series of activities planned for the celebration, with public education and free health screening forming a major part of the campaign. According to Dr. Ahadze, teams of health professionals will use radio, television, and social media platforms to educate the public on hypertension and its dangers. “These platforms will enable us to reach more people with our message,” she said.

On his part, Dr. Abdul-Subulr Yakubu, also a cardiologist, revealed that nearly one-third of Ghanaian adults are living with hypertension, many of whom remain unaware of their condition.

He further expressed concern that only a small number of diagnosed patients are receiving treatment, stressing the need for increased awareness, early detection, and improved access to healthcare services.

Health experts continue to describe hypertension as a “silent killer” because it often shows no symptoms until serious complications such as stroke, heart disease, or kidney failure occur.
