Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) is strengthening its capacity to deliver quality and specialised healthcare through investments in infrastructure, medical equipment and professional training under the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (MahamaCares).
Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Abubakari Bawah Abdulai, stated this in an address read on his behalf by the Acting Director of Medical Affairs, Dr. Yaninga Halwani Fuseini, at a town hall meeting organised by the Fund. He said the collaboration, which began with the Fund’s inception in July 2025, was helping to expand access to specialised medical services, particularly for patients in Northern Ghana.
A major intervention is the establishment of a state-of-the-art Cardiology Centre, which will house a Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory (Cath Lab) and other supporting facilities. When completed, the centre is expected to improve access to advanced cardiovascular care and reduce the need for patients to travel long distances for specialised treatment.
The hospital has also received oxygen concentrators from the Fund to enhance oxygen delivery across its wards, while construction of a modern oxygen plant, fully funded by MahamaCares, is underway.
These investments, alongside other equipment retooling initiatives in the pipeline, are expected to further strengthen the Tamale Teaching Hospital’s capacity to provide timely and quality healthcare.
The Fund is also supporting specialist training opportunities for healthcare professionals, including doctors, pharmacists and nurses. Dr. Bawah Abdulai noted that modern medical equipment must be matched with a skilled workforce capable of using the technology effectively and safely.
On patient support, he indicated that several patients had received treatment through MahamaCares, while others were currently undergoing treatment with assistance from the Fund. The intervention is helping eligible patients access essential care, particularly at the hospital’s Oncology Unit, where patient attendance has increased.
Dr. Bawah Abdulai said the investments would further position Tamale Teaching Hospital to provide specialist care to eligible beneficiaries, particularly those facing financial barriers to essential treatment.
He commended the Government and the Administrator of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund for the initiative and reaffirmed the hospital’s commitment to ensuring that the investments translate into improved access to specialised services, quality care and better patient outcomes.
