The President, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, has inspected ongoing construction work on a state-of-the-art cardiology centre. This was part of his tour of the Northern Region and underscored the government's focus on expanding access to specialised healthcare.
Addressing a gathering at the project site, the president emphasised the urgent need for advanced cardiac care in northern Ghana, noting that no comparable facility currently exists in the area. “There is no facility like this in the entire north of Ghana,” he said. The president explained that patients suffering cardiovascular emergencies, including strokes, are often stabilised before being referred to either Accra or Kumasi for further treatment – delays that can reduce survival chances.
According to him, the new cardiology centre is intended to bridge that gap by providing timely and specialised care. “This facility is for the people of Northern Ghana, where people will have the chance of survival,” he added.
In addition to the cardiology centre project, President Mahama hinted at plans to establish a radiotherapy centre to support cancer treatment. This signals a broader push to strengthen healthcare infrastructure and reduce the burden of long-distance medical referrals.
The projects are expected to significantly improve healthcare delivery in northern Ghana once completed, particularly in the management of non-communicable diseases such as heart conditions and cancer.
