In a decisive move to reshape healthcare delivery in northern Ghana, the Chief Executive Officer of Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH), Dr. Abubakari Bawah Abdulai, has rallied stakeholders to take an active role in crafting a forward-looking strategic plan aimed at elevating the hospital to new heights.
Speaking at a high-level stakeholder consultation in Tamale, Dr. Abdulai underscored the urgency of what he described as a “total reset” for the hospital. The new strategic direction, he explained, is designed to reposition TTH as a leading provider of high-quality, patient-centered care across the region.
“This strategic plan is not just a document; it is a commitment to excellence and accountability,” he stated. “We need your honest feedback, your ideas, and even your criticisms to ensure that we build a system that truly serves the people.”
The consultation brought together a diverse group of participants, many of whom are direct beneficiaries of the hospital’s services. Dr. Abdulai encouraged them to provide objective, practical, and innovative input that will help shape a roadmap capable of addressing longstanding challenges in healthcare delivery.
As part of the hospital’s transformation agenda, the CEO outlined several major initiatives already in progress. Chief among them is the construction of a new cardiology centre, funded through the Ghana Medical Trust Fund. The facility is expected to significantly boost access to specialized cardiac care in northern Ghana.
Beyond infrastructure, TTH is also strengthening its focus on patient experience and inclusivity. A dedicated customer care service has been operationalized, alongside the establishment of a gender desk to ensure equitable and sensitive healthcare delivery for all patients.
Additional improvements are underway in critical areas such as expanding bed capacity, enhancing oxygen supply in the hospital, and upgrading water, sanitation, and essential medical consumables. These measures aim to address immediate service delivery gaps while laying the foundation for long-term resilience.
Stakeholders at the session – representing various government agencies within the regional capital – actively contributed perspectives across key thematic areas. Their recommendations centered on improving efficiency, strengthening inter-agency collaboration, and enhancing overall service quality.
The meeting also featured strong backing from TTH’s leadership team, including the Director of Administration, Emmanuel S.K. Donkor, and the Director of Medical Affairs, Prof. Alhassan Abdul-Mumin, alongside several deputy directors. All reaffirmed their commitment to driving reform and innovation within the institution.
The consultation marks a pivotal step in TTH’s journey toward institutional renewal. With leadership signalling openness to stakeholder-driven change, the hospital is positioning itself not just for improvement, but for transformation—anchored in accountability, inclusivity, and excellence in patient care.
