The Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH), in collaboration with the Cure Blindness Project (CBP), has launched a year-round free cataract surgery programme to improve access to quality eye care services for residents of Tamale and surrounding communities.
The initiative, which aims to restore sight and reduce avoidable blindness, will provide free cataract surgeries to patients diagnosed with the condition while also enhancing the training and capacity of eye care professionals to deliver quality services, particularly in underserved communities. Under the programme, a team of ophthalmologists has commenced cataract surgeries twice every month for eligible patients identified through screening exercises.
The first phase of the initiative is expected to benefit 500 people suffering from cataracts, one of the leading causes of preventable blindness.
Beyond providing free surgeries, the collaboration is expected to strengthen the skills of healthcare personnel through continuous training, helping to build a sustainable eye care system capable of meeting the growing demand for ophthalmic services.
The programme is expected to bring renewed hope to hundreds of beneficiaries by restoring their sight, enabling them to regain their independence, improve their livelihoods, and participate more fully in social and economic activities.
